CASTLETON- John I. Wells, 65, died unexpectedly, Saturday, March 3, 2012 at Rutland Regional Medical Center. Born July 12, 1946 in Bridgeport, CT, he was the son of the late Maynard and Alice (Nichols) Wells. John was the owner of Castleton Snack Bar and also operated concession stands at the Vermont State Fair including Johnny’s Place and the Park Street Restaurant. He was the former owner of John’s 7-11 Convenience Store of Rutland, the Office Bar and Grill in Rutland and the “Blooming Onion” at the fair. He served in the United States Army. He enjoyed all sports, especially NASCAR and boating. He was a member of the Castleton American Legion, Post #50;Loyal Order of Moose of Rutland, the Eagles of Fair Haven , American Vets and was a former member of the Italian Club of Rutland. Surviving family members include his partner, Myrna Wilkins of Castleton, one daughter, Sarah Rose of Cavendish; twin sons, Scott Wells of TX and David Wells of MA; stepchildren, Rene Greene of Belmont, Randy Wilkins of Belmont, Marty Wilkins of Belmont, and Wendy Whitworth of Bunnell, FL; one brother, Sam Wells of Housatonic, MA; three sisters, Linda Robinson of Rutland, Marlene Oakes of Rutland, and Pat Beany of Pittsfield, MA.; 9 grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his parents and a son, Brian Wells in 1987. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 PM Thursday, March 8, 2012 at the Ducharme Funeral Home, 1939 Main St., Castleton. A reception will follow at the Castleton American Legion. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
