Castleton, VT Calvin P. Oldford Calvin Oldford of Castleton, died on April 18, 2013 following a long illness. Cal was a resident of Castleton for 28 years, following his retirement from New York Telephone Co., where he was employed for 25 years. Cal was born in Great Neck, L.I., NY on August 19, 1927. He was the son of Lester Oldford, formerly of Cornerbrook, Newfoundland and Una (Wakeman) Oldford also of Newfoundland. Cal served in the U.S. Army as a communication technician and code clerk from March, 1946 to September 1947. He received his basic training at Fort McClellan, Alabama and from there was assigned to Army Headquarters 24th Corp in Seoul, Korea, where he served his country with honor. Upon discharge from the army Cal joined the construction business which his father had founded in Roslyn, L.I., N.Y. He continued as a partner in the business until his father retired, at which time Cal moved on to employment with N.Y. Telephone Co. He was with N.Y. Tel. for over 25 years. Cal enjoyed fishing and boating while living on Long Island, and used his skill as a carpenter to build his own boats. At least one of these was equipped with an inboard motor and enclosed cabin. In the 1970s Cal discovered an interest in camping in the Adirondack mountains of New York State, and one of his hand built boats always accompanied the family camping trips to Saranac Lake. Calvin is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Castleton, and three adult children: Steven Oldford, of Woodstock, VT; James Oldford of Port Washington, L.I., N.Y.; and Janet Cincotti of West Islip, L.I., N.Y. two grandsons, James Oldford Jr. and Raymond Cincotti Jr., both of Long Island; a sister, Ruth Halle, currently living in Florida; and a niece, Diane Pugliese, also of Florida. A memorial service will be held on Long Island later this summer. Charitable donations may be made to the Rutland County Humane Society at 765 Stevens Road, Pittsford, VT 05763.
