Obituary

A lifelong resident of Rutland, VT, Charles J. McGinnis died March 27, 2016 after 92 years of a life well lived. Charlie, or Mac as many people knew him, was born in Rutland on July 9, 1923, the son of James M. and Mary (Baker) McGinnis. Upon completing his education in local parochial and public schools, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp. at age 19 in 1943. He flew a B-24 bomber throughout his training before heading to Dakar in French West Africa and then on to Foggia, Italy with the 15th Air Force where he was assigned as a ball turret gunner in B-17 bombers and flew 50 missions. Charlie then returned to the States and was reassigned to Lawry Field in Denver, CO as a chief clerk in the student records department. He was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant in 1945. It was while he was stationed in Colorado that he met and married the love of his life, Doris Smith, in a double wedding ceremony along with her sister Evelyn in April 1945. They then returned to Rutland to begin married life and raise their family. Charlie joined the Rutland City Fire Department in 1947 as a fireman then went on to work at CVPS as a regional salesman, and later, with his good friends Joe and Margaret Bove, started the Bove-McGinnis Insurance Agency. In addition he and his son James purchased the Ralph Stafford Agency in Wallingford, VT to establish the McGinnis-Stafford Agency. His success in that field was directly related to his honest and reliable service to the Rutland County community until his retirement in 1992. His warm, friendly, caring nature endeared him to a wide circle of friends whom he and Doris very much enjoyed entertaining during their 52 year-long marriage. A World War II veteran, Charlie was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 648, American Legion Post 31, the Fraternal Order of Elks, Italian American Club and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed a good round of golf, trips with his buddies to Joe Coloutti's hunting camp in Maine and always delighted in winning his friends' money playing cards. Reading books of all kinds was a passion and favorite pastime, as was making the rounds for morning coffee with "the boys". Charlie was predeceased by his wife Doris who passed away in February 1997, his brothers William, Richard and James and sisters Mary and Helen. He leaves his three children, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren: James R. McGinnis and his wife Elizabeth Grimes of Clarendon, VT, his daughters Kathryn McGinnis of Brooklyn, NY, and Kristen (McGinnis) Cohen and her husband Ben and daughter Madison of Derry, NH; Pamela A. (McGinnis) Cupoli and her husband Barry of Rutland, their daughter Jill (Cupoli) Cerreta and her husband Scott and their children Ben, Ally and Bode of Rutland Town; son Bryan Cupoli and his wife Denise and their daughters Adeline and Grayson of Rutland; Peter J. McGinnis of Rutland and his daughter Kelvey of Clarendon, several nieces and nephews, plus family friends Mary McGinnis and Marana McGinnis. At Charlie's request there will be no calling hours. A Mass will be celebrated at St.Peter's Church on Saturday, April 2nd at 11 a.m. Committal of ashes will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery at a later date.
