Hampton, NY Fred G. Warren
Fred G. Warren 74, died Tuesday evening January 25, 2011 at his residence after a brief illness.
Born December 9, 1936 in Hampton, NY, he was the son of the late Roswell and Mabel (Griffin) Warren.
As a youngster, at age 5, while sledding on ice in the Poultney River under the Hampton bridge, he fell through the ice and was trapped against the dam. Luckily his calls for help were heard and he was rescued from the icy waters.
Fred rarely left Hampton where he worked on his brothers farm and helped his dad in their general stores. He entered the United States Navy in 1955, training in Bainbridge, MD and as a recruit was selected among his peers to service as his companys training recruit Chief Petty Officer. Following his training in Bainbridge he married Collie Vaughan on December 28, 1955. His first duty station was as a Navy Ceremonial Guard at Arlington National Cemetery for nearly 18 months. He then was transferred to Davisville, RI, home of the Atlantic Seabees. There he was attached to the Mobile Construction Battalion 7 and then TDY to Commander Construction Battalion Staff. He received his Honorable Discharge in 1957 in Rhode Island as a 3Rd class Petty Officer.
Fred was a descendant of Colonel Gideon Warren, a soldier of the Revolution, and built his house on a 500 acre tract of land in Hampton. The Colonel is buried in Warren Cemetery just off County Rte 18.
He returned home to work and later own and operate the three businesses, as the third generation of Warrens to operate a liquor store, gas station and general store in Hampton. While running these three businesses, he was often seen plowing snow for people who had no other way to get rid of the snow other than shoveling. After selling the family business in 1973, he went to work at Green Mountain College on the maintenance crew, retiring in 1997 after 24 years of service.
He was a member of the Hampton Fire Dept and was Hamptons first Fire Chief at its start in 1964. He was also a member of the Washington Co. Fire Advisory Board for 3 years. He held many different positions with the fire department and retired in 2003 as its president after 39 years of devoted service. He was also a member of the Morning Star Lodge # 37, F & AM in Poultney.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Collie Warren of Hampton, his son, Casey Warren and his wife Jill of Oklahoma, his three daughters, Lisa Schaffer and her husband Greg of PA, Michele OBrien and her husband Tom and Bridget Pietryka and her husband Mike, both of Hampton; eight grandchildren and his three sisters, Roslyn Hughes and her husband Richie, Ruth Jones and Gert Lynch and her husband Bud;. numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 29, at 2:00 pm at the Ducharme Funeral Home, 1939 Main Street, Castleton,VT. Burial will be at a later date.
