Geraldine Mary Doty Peterson of St. Joseph Kervick Residence in Rutland VT passed away after a short illness on June 18, 2015 at the Rutland Regional Medical Center.
Gerry as she liked to be called, was born on March 10, 1928 at the Soldier and Sailors Memorial Hospital in Penn Yann NY to G. E. Laurice Doty and Nellie Overhiser Doty. She was raised in Pulteney NY and graduated from Prattsburg High School in 1945. She attended State Teachers College in Potsdam NY where she met her husband Albert E Peterson of Proctor, VT who was attending Clarkson. They were married on October 18, 1947 in the Methodist Church in Pulteney. Although it was difficult for her, Gerry loved to talk about how they moved over 20 times during their married life spending their early years in Connecticut and then moving to the Owego NY area where they lived for over 40 years. They moved to Vermont in 2002 to be closer to their daughter; Gerry made one last move into the Kervick Residence in 2014, making it her home and making another set of friends and family.
Gerry worked in retail prior to starting her family and was the proverbial stay at home mom of the 50s. Once her children were in school she worked for optometrist Charles Berman, took care of her stepfather, and then became a teachers aide in the Owego Elementary school system, which was her favorite job of all. She was active for many years at the Owego United Methodist Church as a member of the church choir, couples class and the UMW. She served on the board of the Open Door Mission for many years, and was a member of the Eastern Star and Daughters of the American Revolution. After moving to Vermont she continued her church involvement at the Rutland United Methodist church and joined the Gilman Chapter #88 of OES and the Vermont DAR.
Gerry is survived by her younger brother George E.L. Doty Jr of Branchport NY and her three children: Eric (and Barbara) Peterson, Mark (and Joann) Peterson all of Nichols, NY, Ellen Wakker of West Rutland VT and her adopted daughter Judy Blair of N Clarendon VT. Nana, Grandma and GG is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren all of whom and for she was proud and grateful. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Albert Erick Peterson in 2011 and brother Richard Doty in 1976.
A memorial service was held at the Rutland UMC on Friday August 28, 2015, officiated by Pastor Hannah Rogers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rutland UMC, 71 Williams St., Rutland VT. Burial of both Gerry and Al will take place on Sept 19 at the Glen View Cemetery in Pulteney NY.
