Obituary

Glenn Hampton, age 85, died at Rutland Regional Medical Center, Rutland, VT, on Saturday January 27, 2018, of Squamous cell carcinoma. A long-time resident of Whitehall, NY, Glenn was born on December 23, 1932 in East Orange, NJ, the son of James W. Hampton and Margaret L. (Wilkins) Hampton. Glenn grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Bloomfield High School. He then attended North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC, breaking for service in the Air Force from 1953 to 1957. He spent 3 years of his service at M.I.T. working with radar, before returning to NCSU to complete his Bachelor of Science in forestry in 1960. He later did graduate work at University of California Santa Cruz and Utah State University. Throughout his school years and after, Glenn was an active athlete in a variety of sports. He played varsity soccer at NCSU, and while in the Air Force played with New Hampshires semi-professional soccer team, Manchester United. Among other sports, he loved baseball, basketball, and tennis, as well as fishing and hunting. He was also an avid hiker. In 1960, Glenn began his long career as a forester with the United States Forest Service, most of it in Southern and Northern California, where his positions included, Forester, Ranger, District Ranger, and finally, Recreation Staff Officer in the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. Among other awards and achievements, in 1975 he won a prestigious national Superior Service Award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Glenn also taught forestry and related courses throughout his career and retirement. One of his proudest accomplishments was his role as the founder of the Tahoe Rim Trail, a hiking trail that now circumnavigates Lake Tahoe, covering 165 miles in the Sierra Nevada and Carson ranges of California and Nevada. After his retirement, he and his spouse Anne Marie moved to Whitehall, where they established High Meadow Ranch. For many years, he was a member of Fairhaven, VTs Rotary Club, serving as president in 2005-2006. He leaves behind his wife of 37 years, Anne Marie (Ahern) Hampton, his brothers Wade S. Hampton of London, England, Geoffrey L. Hampton of Knoxville, TN, William B. Hampton of Levittown, PA, and sister Mary N. Hampton of Montgomery, Alabama, and previous spouses Diane Spence and Ingrid Van Der Hope. He is also survived by one daughter and three sons and their spousesRebecca L. Meyer of Huntington Beach, CA (Roger); Gregory G. Hampton of Kailua, HI (Ami), and Eric Van Der Hope and Russell Van Der Hope, and four stepchildren, Jennifer A. Miller of Bronxville, NY (Scott), Jodi M. Monahan of Berkeley, CA; Michael E. Stewart of Muggeeraba, Australia (Gina); and Stephanie S. Mitchell of Needham, MA (John). He leaves behind five grandchildren, Rachel Adams, Adam Meyer, Sarah Meyer, Christopher Hampton, and Samantha Hampton, as well as five great grandchildren, Micha Adams, Alex Meyer Smith, Emery Meyer, and Eileen and Amelia Espinosa. A Memorial service for Glenn will be held at Ducharme Funeral Home, 1939 Main St., Castleton, VT, on Saturday February 3, 2018, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tahoe Rim Trail Association, www.tahoerimtrail.org, or Foley Cancer Center, 160 Allen St., Rutland, VT 05701.
