Castleton Marjorie Jones Burditt Anderson
Marjorie Anderson passed away peacefully with family at her side at her home on the farm in Castleton.
Born May 25, 1921 in Rutland, VT to Rollin Asher Burditt and Elisabeth Weir Burditt, Marjorie grew up in Rutland on Bellevue Avenue attending Dana School and Rutland High School, graduating in the class of 1940. As a child she loved skating on the rink her father built in the back yard and playing with the neighborhood kids. After graduation, she attended Rutland Business School and worked as a secretary at the local Red Cross. When she turned 24 she was allowed to go overseas and help with the war effort.
She served with the Red Cross during World War II working at the Cigarette Camps where soldiers waited for transit home or back to the front. After the war she returned to Rutland to be in her sister Bettys wedding and then went to work at Dartmouth as a secretary until her father died. She came back to Rutland to help her mother out with the house and started work at CVPS in the collections department. She found she was not very fond of keeping track of figures and at the same time was approached to initiate the position of Field Representative for the Vermont Association for the Crippled (the precursor of VAC). She traveled Vermont for 16 years in that job staying with local families and making presentations to service organizations and clubs on behalf of the VAC and Easter Seals.
She met her husband Chester in 1960 at dessert hosted by her future sister-in-law before giving a VAC presentation at a PTA meeting in Castleton. She and Chester were married 5 years later on August 11, 1965 at the chapel at Grace Congregational Church. They took a honeymoon at Niagara Falls, Eisenhower Locks and even bet on a horse at Saratoga.
Marjorie loved Chester and living on the farm, walking and riding on the land, making meals for the hired men and hosting the many family and guests who came to visit. After Chester retired they were regulars on the Extension Service bus tours traveling the country with other members of the farming community and enjoying the sights and each others company.
She was very active in the East Hubbardton Baptist Church, faithfully playing the organ for over 30 years and organizing the summer bible camps for children and Old Home Day in August. She was asked to play the organ for one last time this past Easter. Her devotion to the church and to spreading the gospel led her to help in the formation of Church Women United which performed charitable and mission work in the area.
As Chesters health failed Marjorie devoted herself to caring for her husband who died at home in 2006. She has been cared for over the last several years by her caregivers Rita Decker, Patty Cook, Marie Gilman, Avis Sawyer and Ann Ingram, and also assisted greatly by Glenn and Martha Hayward, Ron Allen and many others on the farm and beyond who lent a hand, paid a visit or wrote a note. Her family would like to thank them all for their care and companionship through these last few years. She enjoyed their company and continued her regular correspondence with many friends and associates from her years with the VAC and church groups right up until the end. She enjoyed sitting on the porch and watching the birds and life on the farm. She died with grace and dignity, putting her faith and trust in the Lord.
Marjorie is survived by her nephews: Peter Morse and his wife Diane of Putnam, CT, Rollin Morse and his wife Deborah of New Bern, NC, Eric Hon-Anderson and his wife Ali of Bedford, MA and Karl Anderson and his wife Carolyn of Rutland, VT. She is also survived by 11 great nieces and nephews Laurel Botting, Heather and Samuel Morse, Valerie and Adam Morse, Max and Isabel Anderson and David, Stephen Elizabeth and Joseph Anderson.
