Obituary

Rebecca Elizabeth (McIlhinney) Oberkirch of Hubbardton, died at her home on February 6, 2016 surrounded by family. She lived a long, full life and died at age 88. Becky was born Nov. 17, 1927 in Brooklyn, NY. She was the oldest of 3 children born to John and Jean McIlhinney, formerly of Greenock, Scotland, who came to America to get married. Becky attended local public schools in Bayside, Queens. It was while attending Bayside High School that she met the love of her life, Frederick Oberkirch. Fred and Becky were married on Nov. 20, 1948. They were married for 58 years. Becky attended Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School in Manhattan, and worked as a secretary for General Electric, and the Methodist Board of Missions. Fred and Becky raised their 4 children in Bayside until moving to Vermont in 1976. Becky served as the Administrative Assistant to the President of Green Mountain College in Poultney, VT for 14 years, retiring in 1994. Becky was an avid gardener and bird lover. She was always involved in community activities including 4H, Girl Scouts, and Cub Scouts. Becky was past President of the Poultney Womans Club and active in the Vermont Federation of Womens Clubs. Becky taught a Bone Builders class at the Castleton Community Health Center, was a member of the Friendly Circle, Eastern Star, and was a past President of the Art Club of Fair Haven. Becky served on the Board of Listers, was a Town Selectman for 8 years, a Justice of the Peace, and Church Clerk for 8 years (as a member of the Congregational Church of Hubbardton). Becky was a member of the Poultney United Methodist Church and served as a lay preacher in the area, filling in for local pastors on occasion. As Justice of the Peace, she performed over 30 wedding ceremonies. Becky also had the privilege of joining 7 of her grandchildren and one nephew in matrimony. As a cancer survivor, Becky volunteered for sixteen years at the RRMC Foley Cancer Center. She was a familiar face in the welcoming area and was honored with a Governors Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. She was also an involved member of Women to Women, a support group in for women diagnosed with cancer. Becky was predeceased by her son Bruce in 1987 and her husband Fred, in 2006. Becky is survived by her daughter, Susan Monaco of Poultney, her son Rick Oberkirch, of Brandon, her daughter Wendy Fjeld of Brandon, 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, a sister Jean Britt of Fair Haven, a brother Jack McIlhinney of Windham ME, and many nieces an nephews. Beckys greatest joy was time spent with family. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother. Services will be held on Saturday, February 20 at 11 am at the Poultney United Methodist Church. A reception at the church will follow.
